Juan Almaráz, also known as Juan Almaráz Guerra, is pictured above with his brother Eluterio and is standing on the right.   He was born on March 13, 1861 in Ciudad Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico.  He immigrated to Texas in 1875 and later married Juana Flores Orozco, also from Ciudad Mier, in San Diego on December 6, 1894.  Together, they had nine children all born in the vicinity of Hebbronville, Texas with many, if not all, born on Rancho Palo Blanco.  "Juanita," I conclude,  died when the children were young between 1908, the birth of her youngest child, and 1910 when she did not appear on the census with her family.  It is unknown where she was buried but because the family was living in Hebbronville at the time, I suspect she was buried in the "Old" Cemetary in Hebbronville.  Juan was known as gambler who enjoyed the many dances that could be found in the area.  He died in Hebbronville on June 11, 1944 and is buried at the rear of the "New" Hebbronville Cemetary.  He had a small concrete marker originally, but my uncle, Reynaldo Almaraz, placed a new marble marker upon it in the 1990's.  The Juan Almaraz children are listed on the left.
